I think it is important to appreciate the fact that both Mélanie (now 22 years of age and studying in New York) and her brother Lorenzo (19 years old and studying in Paris) have been having to cope with their mother's kidnapping for more than 6 years and are fighting constantly so that she and the other hostages are not forgotten.

I would like to add that both the FARC and President Uribe have little to gain from Ingrid Betancourt's release - for the FARC Ingrid is their main pawn, and for Uribe a political thorn in his side which he may consider best kept lost in the jungle. An example of President Uribe's negative interferance in the recent past was the attack upon and killing of Raul Reyes (the FARC's second in command), at the precise moment he was carrying out negotiations with Venezuelan, Ecuadorian and French officials in the aim of releasing a further 19 hostages - including Ingrid Betancourt. Had those advanced negotiations come to term, Ingrid along with the others would have been freed last month. The Colombian government has since confirmed that they were fully aware of these negotiations prior to attacking the FARC camp.
This is why continued and growing international pressure is absolutely essential in encouraging both sides to the negotiating table and bringing an end to this crisis.
