Consuelo Gonzalez : Conf Presse Paris 22-02-08

This is an extract of the video conference given by Consuelo Gonzalez (liberated by the FARC on 10th January 2008) and Mélanie Delloye-Betancourt on the 22nd February 2008 – the day before the 6th anniversary of Ingrid Betancourt’s kidnapping:

Consuelo Gonzalez, ex-hostage held by the FARC – was liberated on the 10th of January 2008 following 6 years of captivity. She comes to France in support Ingrid Betancourt and the other hostages.

Consuelo Gonzalez:

"The day I found my freedom, through a humanitarian gesture by the FARC, and through [the actions of] President Chavez – I did not understand why they were doing this. That day, I realised that a different attitude began to show itself in the FARC, in regard to the hostages. After my liberation I really understood that the FARC are beginning to make gestures of good-will."

Mélanie Delloye-Betancourt:

"I am extremely moved to have Consuelo with us today. It is so beautiful… erm… well, I think that you can all imagine … to have her with us today, since she was on the other side - she was with all those that are there in that jungle… waiting for the radio messages from their families… waiting for the day that, perhaps, this nightmare ends… and today, she is here close to us; beautiful… smiling… intelligent and ready to fight so that her companions shall also return to freedom. So for me, this proves that finally… that’s it… there is no fatality. Throughout all those years we, as a family, had to hear very difficult things - such as the situation in which we found ourselves was impossible to resolve because there was no desire [to do so], either on behalf of the FARC or the Colombian government…. Well, today I can believe that things will advance – that my brother and I could one day see and embrace our mother… and that it will be the same thing for all the other families who are living this horror since so many years."
